The Boston Celtics just traded Jaylen Brown — five-time All-Star, 28.7 points per game, the guy who was literally holding the Larry O’Brien trophy two years ago — for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two seconds. Paul George is 36 years old. The Boston Globe called it “40 cents on the dollar” and “one of the worst trades in Boston sports history.” I’ve been a Knicks fan for 27 years and I genuinely don’t know how to feel about any of this.

Meanwhile, Miami landed Giannis Antetokounmpo. Two-time MVP. The Greek Freak. Pat Riley called in every chip he’s been hoarding since LeBron left and somehow convinced Milwaukee to take Tyler Herro and a small nation’s worth of draft capital. The Heat went from 30-1 title odds to 6-1 in the East overnight. The 76ers now have Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey as a legitimate Big Three — assuming Embiid’s knees hold together for more than 40 games, which is a bet I wouldn’t make with your money. The entire Eastern Conference just went scorched earth.
The Knicks re-signed Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet.
That’s it. That’s the offseason. They lost Mitchell Robinson to the Celtics (three years, $47.4 million, which, honestly, good for Mitch), brought back some depth guys, and sat on their hands while the rest of the conference set itself on fire trying to catch them. CBS Sports still has them as East favorites. I already wrote when the Knicks won that I wasn’t capable of processing a championship without immediately catastrophizing. I was right. I just didn’t anticipate that the catastrophizing would have nothing to do with the Knicks specifically.
Here’s the thing nobody wants to say out loud: the Celtics’ moves might have actually helped New York. Boston tried to get Giannis first — Milwaukee picked Miami instead — and then pivoted to Brown-for-George like that was a comparable outcome. It wasn’t. They’ve already broken down the Celtics trade in detail, and the verdict isn’t kind. Boston is in a rebuild dressed up as a retool, and the rest of the East’s arms race has everyone burning picks and salary flexibility chasing a team that just stood still.
Giannis in Miami is terrifying on paper. Brown, Embiid, and Maxey is terrifying on paper. But “terrifying on paper” is where Eastern Conference title contenders go to die. The Knicks didn’t win last year because they made the biggest splash. They won because Jalen Brunson was the best player in every series that mattered and their role players showed up when it counted. You don’t replace that kind of organizational cohesion by trading your best asset for a guy closer to retirement than his prime.
I’ve watched this franchise lose in every conceivable way for nearly three decades. I know what it looks like when a team is pretending to compete. And right now, the Heat and the 76ers and even the shell-shocked Celtics are all pretending in slightly different ways. The Knicks did nothing this summer because they didn’t need to do anything.
