The Knicks won the championship and LeBron James crossed them off his list, and I’ve been staring at that sentence for three hours trying to decide if it’s funny or tragic or just perfectly, irreversibly New York.

Rich Paul went on his “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman on July 3rd and pulled out an actual whiteboard. An actual whiteboard. He pointed to the Knicks box and said, “If the Knicks hadn’t won, there would be no board. He’d be going to the Knicks.” No hedging, no agent-speak. Just a clean, devastating acknowledgment that the 2026 NBA title — the one Jalen Brunson delivered and the city is still screaming about — is the exact reason LeBron James will not be wearing blue and orange next season.

Let that land for a second.

The trophy took him off the board. Or put another way: the Knicks finally got good enough that they don’t need LeBron, and LeBron finally wanted to come, and those two things happened at exactly the same time. Fifty-three years of losing and the one year they win is the year it costs them LeBron James. I genuinely think my grandmother, who has a picture of Pope John Paul II and Patrick Ewing on the same wall in Napoli, would call this a curse. She’d probably be right.

Stefan Bondy at the Post has sources saying the union is “very unlikely” — “Not gonna happen.” The Knicks are, per Begley, “very happy with the core of their roster.” They should be. They swept the Cavaliers 4-0 in the ECF and then handled the Spurs in the Finals. Why would they blow that up for a 41-year-old on his farewell tour?

So LeBron’s real list is the Warriors and the Cavaliers, maybe the Heat. Draymond Green already opted out of his $27.7 million player option specifically to give Golden State the cap room to chase him. Rich Paul heard from 27 teams. Twenty-seven. And the one he genuinely wanted, based on everything we now know, shut the door by becoming champions.

Here’s the only honest complication: LeBron at 41, coming off a full season with a new team, might have been a headache the Knicks don’t need anyway. Brunson is the guy. The locker room is his. You don’t import the most complicated player in league history into that and assume it goes smoothly.

But that’s not the same as not wanting him. And it’s definitely not the same as him not wanting you.

My rec league buddy Marco, who’s been saying for two years that LeBron to the Knicks was fake fan fiction, owes me an apology he will never give me, because Rich Paul literally drew it on a whiteboard and Marco doesn’t believe in primary sources.
