The NBA free agency moratorium opens at 6 PM ET tonight, and Brian Windhorst is reporting that the Golden State Warriors plan to go at LeBron James the second it does. Not tomorrow. Not this week. Tonight.
I, a person who spent the last year watching his sister roast his Knicks takes in the family group chat, am not emotionally equipped for this.
According to Windhorst’s ESPN reporting, the Warriors are locked in on LeBron and intend to move the moment free agency opens. That urgency is the story. The moratorium isn’t a finish line — it’s a starting gun. Teams couldn’t officially contact LeBron’s camp until 6 PM. Every second after that is a live, open negotiation, and Golden State has Draymond’s opt-out opened the door to use their $15 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception. That’s the bag. That’s what they’re dangling in front of a 41-year-old who averaged 20.9 points per game this season.

There is a version of this where LeBron James plays alongside Stephen Curry. I keep typing that and it keeps being a real sentence. Steph still finishing, LeBron still bulldozing transition, and whatever Draymond becomes after opting out. His agent Rich Paul has indicated 10 to 12 teams have interest, which is the kind of number that means the auction is real and LeBron knows exactly what he’s doing. He’s 41 and running the table.
The detail that wrecked me: LeBron still hadn’t taken a meeting with the Lakers when this moratorium dropped. He was playing golf in Akron. The team he’s spent the last decade with couldn’t even get a sit-down while Golden State was out here sharpening pencils and drawing up pitch decks. That is a message. You don’t have to decode it.
Warriors LeBron free agency chatter has been floating around for weeks, but “floating around” and “Windhorst saying they’re zeroed in and moving tonight” are two completely different categories of real.
The honest counter is this: Windhorst also floated the Klutch Sports leverage read. Rich Paul creates a Warriors frenzy, the Lakers panic, LeBron re-ups in LA for more money and AD gets a better deal from Washington too. It’s a possibility. Rich Paul has run this playbook before, and a $15M MLE is genuinely not a lot to ask LeBron to uproot his life for. So yes — this could be negotiating theater.
But Windhorst didn’t say “the Warriors are interested.” He said they’re zeroed in and moving today.
