The Knicks are about to raise their first championship banner in more than fifty years, and the NBA’s big idea was scheduling that same night as LeBron James’ regular-season debut with the 76ers.
It’s not some random Tuesday matchup, either. This is the night Madison Square Garden finally gets its championship banner ceremony, the first one to go up there since 1973, and according to CBS Sports’ breakdown of the 2026-27 schedule, the league put Philadelphia in that building on purpose. LeBron James signed with the Sixers this offseason after eight seasons in L.A., and he’s bringing Jaylen Brown with him, acquired from Boston in the trade that sent Paul George and draft picks the other way.
So the Knicks’ coronation doubles as the trailer for somebody else’s movie.
Josh Hart — the same stat-sheet-stuffing Hart who helped win the title in the first place — noticed first. He posted his reaction on X within minutes of the news leaking, and the tone was dry enough that outlets ran with it as its own story instead of just a quote buried in someone else’s.

That tracks. He spent the entire championship run doing the unglamorous stuff nobody puts on a poster, and now he’s watching the league build its opening night around the guy who just got to Philadelphia.
This isn’t even the first time this offseason the NBA has jerked around its own schedule to hype up LeBron: the Christmas Day slate got rearranged around Philly too, back when the league was still figuring out how loud it wanted to market this thing. LeBron shows up somewhere new, and the schedule bends around him whether the home team likes it or not.
To be fair, the Knicks aren’t walking into opening night as some overmatched host. They’re the defending champions hanging a banner in a building that waited half a century for it, and if they beat the team the league built its whole marketing plan around, that’s the funniest possible ending to this entire setup.
My sister already texted the family group chat asking if we need a shirt that says we won the title and still got upstaged in the same sentence. I still don’t have a good answer for her.
The banner still goes up, LeBron still gets his welcome tour, and Josh Hart already sounds like he’s saving the rest of this for October.
