The Miami Heat just traded four rotation players and three first-round picks for a 31-year-old who played 36 games last year, and I genuinely cannot tell if this is genius or a cry for help.
Shams Charania broke it on ESPN Thursday morning: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a 2030 swap, and a 2033 second. The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to Miami Heat goes official July 6. Pat Riley is absolutely undefeated at winning the offseason.

Now somebody explain to me how this team is supposed to score.
Giannis is a battering ram. He operates from the elbow and the block, running downhill, drawing fouls, eating the rim. That works great when you have shooters. Bam Adebayo is also a battering ram. He shot 31.8% from three over the past two seasons and ranked 89th out of 98 rotation bigs in three-point attempts. Giannis and Bam is a spacing nightmare: two non-shooters who both want to operate in the same eight feet of paint. Who opens the floor? Norman Powell, who is an unrestricted free agent right now and might leave? Andrew Wiggins on a player option? Miami gave up their actual shot creator (Herro) in this deal. There’s no point guard on this roster who can run pick-and-roll at a championship level. There’s nobody to space the floor so Giannis can do the thing that makes Giannis terrifying.
Riley’s done this before, of course. He’s landed franchise-altering players on sheer willpower and a reputation for winning. LeBron, Wade, Bosh. That worked. But LeBron also showed up to the Finals in Year 1. Giannis hasn’t been back to the Finals since he won it all in 2021 — that 50-point Game 6 was genuinely one of the greatest performances I’ve ever watched, and then it just… stopped. Lost to the Celtics in ‘22. Got taken out by an eight-seed Heat team in the first round in ‘23. Lost to the Pacers in the first round in ‘24. Hasn’t won a playoff series since 2022.
The Bucks couldn’t get him over the hump with a full-strength roster built around him. The Heat are betting they can do it with a roster that’s thinner and older, without Herro pushing pace and creating offense off the dribble.
Meanwhile, Boston was sitting there offering Jaylen Brown and two firsts. Giannis said no. That’s his right. The Celtics look smart right now.
I’m not saying Miami blew it. Giannis is still a top-five player on this planet when healthy, and the Heat’s culture is real — they’ve dragged eighth seeds to the Finals before. Maybe this is the motivating reinvention Giannis needs. Maybe Bam kicks out to the three-point line and reinvents himself at 28. Maybe Riley has a secondary move lined up that makes all of this click. The Heat gave up everything, so they’d better.
But the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to Miami Heat 2026 has the same energy as every blockbuster that looks amazing on paper until somebody puts the roster in a blender and notices neither guy can shoot. The press conference is already a 10. The spacing is a four.
