A reader encountering this would experience approximately three seconds of genuine confusion before scrolling to the byline, which read “ESPN Generative AI Services,” and understanding exactly what had happened.

The error was caught, corrected to the grammatically broken “Thornton sparks Rockets in over Nuggets,” then corrected again to the serviceable “Thornton sparks Rockets in win over Nuggets.” Three versions of a headline for a Summer League game. This is what efficiency looks like.

ESPN has used AI to generate game recaps since September 2024. The stated purpose is covering “underserved” sports — PLL, NWSL, NCAA baseball and softball, the G League, and NBA Summer League — sports that a newsroom that has been through significant layoffs presumably cannot staff adequately. The framing is generous; the actual function is cost reduction applied to the commodity end of sports journalism: game recaps, score summaries, the factual scaffolding that a wire service once provided. Automation handles it now; the remaining humans do other things.

When the automation produced a headline crediting the wrong team as the winner, ESPN’s spokesperson offered this: “No article is published to the site without an editor reading it and manually publishing it.”

That statement is not a defense. It is a confession dressed as a defense. ESPN is telling you, with complete accuracy, that a human editor read this article — read the headline crediting the wrong team — and then clicked publish. The AI failed at the one task it was deployed to perform. The human failed to catch it. And the spokesperson’s statement locates the fault entirely in the human, because the human is the one who pressed the button.

This is the organizational logic of automation made visible, and it works whether the machine succeeds or fails. When the AI produces a correct recap, ESPN saves money and gets content. When the AI produces a recap crediting the Nuggets with a Rockets win, the human editor failed to supervise it adequately. The machine is right no matter what; the humans who remain are accountable for the machine’s errors. The argument for having fewer humans was the argument for the AI; the AI’s failure becomes the argument for better oversight; better oversight requires humans to pay very close attention to AI-generated content; which is exactly the editorial work the humans used to do. ESPN is paying Pat McAfee $60 million and has an AI write Summer League recaps that occasionally misidentify the winner.

The AI has failed this way before, in the same program. It wrote a recap of Alex Morgan’s final professional match that did not mention her, or her retirement, at all. A program deployed to cover “underserved” sports produced a story about one of the most significant retirements in American soccer history and erased the relevant person from her own farewell. That failure also had a human somewhere in the chain who did not catch it.

The logic here is less like a restaurant replacing its cooks with a microwave than it is like replacing them with a line cook who has never tasted the food, then blaming the server when a customer receives the wrong dish. The server should have checked. Of course the server should have checked; that is now the server’s primary function; the server is now a QA department for the line cook. This is what “human oversight” means in practice: the humans who remain exist to supervise the machine that partially replaced them, and when the machine fails, the oversight was inadequate.

The ESPN spokesperson’s statement is the most honest thing anyone at the network has said about this program. It contains no spin, no evasion. A human read it and published it. That is true. It is also a perfect description of a system in which the human’s attention is the last line of defense for an automated process, and the last line of defense failed, and so we are here.
