Reality show editors have a move they use when an ex reappears on screen: the confessional cut. Cut to the old flame’s face doing something ordinary, cut back to the new couple, hold two beats too long. I co-host a tiny podcast about reality TV with a friend from UT, and we talk about this cut more than anything else on the show — it’s the cheapest, most effective trick in the format, because the audience does the work of connecting the frames for free. Nobody has to say “these two used to date.” The editing says it.
Nobody storyboarded what’s happening at the US Open, but it’s playing like the same cut anyway. Taylor Fritz turned up in New York with Olivia Jade Giannulli right as his ex, Morgan Riddle, is back on TV working the tournament’s fashion sideline. Nobody planned those two storylines to land in the same two weeks. They just did.
Fritz was photographed with Giannulli in New York City on Monday, walking around the same city hosting the tournament where he enters as the No. 9 seed, the highest-seeded American man in the draw. It’s not the first sighting. The two were first linked back in May at a club in West Hollywood, and both sides denied anything official at the time. Fritz reportedly brought her as his date to fellow American Tommy Paul’s wedding in July. Reports now describe them as “seeing each other romantically” without either side calling it exclusive, which is exactly enough for anyone searching whether Taylor Fritz has a new girlfriend to decide they already know.
That’s the dating rumor. The split-screen is what nobody’s naming out loud.
Fritz split from Morgan Riddle in April, ending a relationship that ran nearly six years and turned Riddle into arguably the most recognizable name to carry the WAG label in tennis — her own brand, her own following, her own reasons to be at a tournament that has nothing to do with whether her ex is dating someone new. She announced the breakup on Instagram wearing a shirt that said “World’s Best Ex-Girlfriend,” which is either the most gracious exit in recent WAG history or the most efficient bit of personal branding I’ve seen all year, and I don’t think those two things are in conflict. She’s since told Elite Daily she’ll never date an athlete again, and said the split was easier than she expected because they stayed on good terms.
Good terms are easy to talk about in an interview. They get harder to hold onto when your ex’s new situation is unfolding in the same city, during the same two weeks, while you’re the one on camera talking about something else entirely. Riddle is back as Who What Wear’s sideline fashion correspondent for the 2026 tournament, the job that made her famous in the first place, courtside outfit breakdowns and trend reports, on TV covering what people are wearing while Fritz plays out whatever this is with Giannulli a few sections away. Nobody plotted this. The tournament schedule did it by accident, and it’s more effective than anything a producer could’ve built on purpose.
I keep coming back to why this specific configuration (new person, old person, same building) gets so much more traction than either half would get alone. Devin Booker so much as looks at someone new and the internet turns it into a tier list upgrade within a day, like dating is a fantasy roster move. But that’s usually one storyline. This is two storylines that were supposed to be done with each other, occupying the same physical space without acknowledging it, and the audience gets to do the math nobody involved is doing publicly. It’s not really about whether Fritz and Giannulli are official. “Moving on” only reads as moving on when the person you moved on from isn’t still standing in the same room, wearing a headset, doing her job.

None of that has much to do with tennis, which is funny given that Fritz is walking into the tournament of his career — top-seeded American, into mixed doubles at No. 2 alongside Jessica Pegula after Elena Rybakina withdrew with an ankle injury. That’s a real, load-bearing storyline that’s going to get buried under Instagram screenshots by Wednesday, and I’m not totally sure that’s fair to him, but I understand why it’s happening anyway. Olivia Jade has spent years being the most-discussed daughter of a college admissions scandal, famous for reasons that have nothing to do with tennis, and Fritz is one of the rare men’s tennis players Americans can actually name. Put them in the same city as his very-online ex during the same tournament, and you don’t need a headline. The frame does it for you.

I don’t know if Fritz and Giannulli are actually together, and neither, technically, does anyone reporting on it. What I do know is that Riddle didn’t leave the frame, and the discourse is going to keep pretending she did until the tournament makes it impossible to ignore that she’s still in it.
