I studied sociology in undergrad, mostly because I liked the vocabulary for describing things everyone already does without naming them, and “status hierarchy via proximity” is a phrase that would have fit neatly into a term paper about this. We don’t actually know anything about who Devin Booker and Irina Shayk are to each other. We know what a source told a magazine, what a gossip account photographed from across a restaurant, and what conclusions a comment section can generate from that in under a day. The tier list gets built regardless of how little material it’s built from.

I don’t have a clean answer for why fans talk about dating history like a draft class, only the pattern itself, showing up again on a couple who didn’t ask to be ranked. Maybe it’s just what happens when we run out of things to grade and start grading people’s lives instead. Maybe Booker and Shayk have an actual summer together that has nothing to do with any of this. Both can be true, and only one of them is any of our business.
