Sami Zayn rolled up the Undisputed WWE Champion in a triple threat that nobody on the booking sheet expected him to win, and now CM Punk has to walk into Chicago on Monday and deal with it.

Zayn pinned Cody Rhodes at Night of Champions in Riyadh with a counter of the Cross Rhodes — a roll-up, the most beautifully unglamorous finish imaginable — and became WWE Champion for the first time in a ten-year career. The crowd lost its mind. Kevin Owens, sitting at home with an injury, posted that Zayn has “brought out the best in me as both an ally and a foe. That’s because he is THE best.” I was extremely online for this. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

The part that makes this genuinely insane isn’t just the win. It’s what the win broke. Reports via Dave Meltzer confirmed that the original SummerSlam plan had Punk challenging Rhodes for the title — the full redemption arc, Punk vs. Cody, the marquee match WWE had been building toward all year. Zayn winning apparently wasn’t the scripted finish. The script got overridden. When that happens in wrestling, it usually means one of two things: creative panic or genuine electricity. This felt like the second one.
The Daniel Bryan WrestleMania 30 comparison writes itself, but it also lands. Bryan overrode his scripted position because the crowd refused to accept the alternative. Zayn winning in Riyadh has the same energy: a performer whose connection with the audience became too loud to ignore, even mid-build. Sami Zayn broke WWE’s carefully laid SummerSlam architecture because he had to. The math demanded it.
Now CM Punk is expected to return to Raw on July 6 at the Allstate Arena. In Chicago. His city. Punk’s return, which was presumably choreographed to culminate in a SummerSlam title match against Rhodes, now has to recalibrate on live television in front of a crowd that will absolutely burn the building down the second his music hits. Meanwhile, Sami Zayn is the champion nobody was supposed to be holding. The WWE marketing department hadn’t even been told to update the SummerSlam key art as of July 1.

That last detail might be the funniest thing in professional wrestling in years.
The honest counterargument is right there, though, and I’m not going to dodge it: Cody Rhodes earned a rematch at SmackDown on July 3, and that match happens Monday in Chicago too. The scenario where Cody wins the belt back and Punk confronts him for SummerSlam is extremely plausible — almost too neat. Zayn’s reign might last exactly one week. That stings. A transitional champion after a moment that felt this real would be a deflation. I’m choosing to believe WWE is smarter than that. I’ve been wrong before.
After following Oba Femi’s King of the Ring win and our Night of Champions preview that had Zayn as a live outside shot, this is the best-case outcome nobody was brave enough to actually predict. Monday night in Chicago is going to be absolutely unhinged. I’ll be on the couch for all of it.
