Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns are doing this again at SummerSlam, and I’m making the conscious decision to be happy about it. I know exactly what you’re going to say.
Yes, they’ve been in some version of this match at three WrestleManias. The Shield breakup in 2014, the MITB cash-in at WM31, the WM40 assist that ended Reigns’ four-year reign, and then WrestleMania 41 where Rollins beat Reigns clean in a triple threat — Heyman turned on Reigns mid-match, Rollins got the pin, it happened. All of it is on tape.
In a business built on manufactured memory, that win is load-bearing.
The reason this rivalry keeps pulling people back isn’t nostalgia, or not only nostalgia. It’s that Rollins’ record against Reigns is the most honest ledger in WWE. During Reigns’ four-year Universal/WWE Championship reign, he never once pinned Rollins. That’s kayfabe. It’s also just true. The crowd in Minneapolis isn’t going to be responding to a storyline. They’ll be responding to something that actually happened, which in wrestling is rarer than it sounds.
On Raw this past Monday, Rollins interrupted Reigns’ promo and called his shot. Reigns accepted the way only Reigns can: “I don’t want to beat you, I need to beat you. I need my entire family to witness me beating you.” Triple H made it official shortly after.

The honest counter-argument is that three WrestleMania appearances does something to a rivalry. The crowd can feel the formula before the match starts — there’s a version of Minneapolis where the heat is more ceremonial than real, where people cheer because they know they’re supposed to, because that’s what you do when these two walk out. At some point even the most compelling rivalry becomes a ritual, and rituals don’t always generate genuine heat.
My sister texted me “again???” when the confirmation dropped from Night of Champions season into summer. Yeah. Again. Reigns has the title, Rollins has the claim, and I’ve got a couch and zero complaints.
