CM Punk won the WWE Championship in Cody Rhodes’ absence, then made sure Rhodes felt it in person on a stage in New York. WWE usually needs months of scripted betrayal to manufacture heat this personal. This time, Triple H barely had to lift a pen.
Rhodes was booked to face Sami Zayn on July 6 in Chicago’s Allstate Arena. Gunther jumped him backstage first, powerbombing him through a table onto the concrete floor, and Rhodes never got cleared to wrestle. Punk stepped into the open slot instead, in the same building where he’d won his first WWE Championship nearly fifteen years earlier, and won the title in Chicago in the spot that belonged to Rhodes, not him. Nine days later at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Punk and Rhodes actually teamed up and won, beating Gunther and Zayn with a surprise run-in from returning SmackDown GM Nick Aldis. Then, during the celebration, Punk flung the title over his shoulder and it caught Rhodes square in the eye. It was the same eye that swelled shut at WrestleMania, a detail too cute for any writers’ room to risk inventing. Punk called it an accident. Rhodes, understandably, did not buy it.
Nobody scripts a coincidence that specific.
One report claims WWE’s own cameras caught the two of them going at it backstage after that show, heated enough that a producer had to step between them, and that WWE briefly posted footage of the blowup online before quietly pulling it down. Treat that as color, not gospel, since it’s a single outlet’s claim. It lines up with everything that happened three days later in New York regardless.
That confrontation played out live on the SummerSlam Kickoff stage at Fanatics Fest, right after Triple H had already made Punk-Rhodes official for SummerSlam off the back of the SNME dust-up. Punk tried to play diplomat, calling the backstage blowup “a regrettable incident that probably shouldn’t have been on camera” and adding that sometimes brothers fight, they apologize, and they move on. Rhodes wasn’t buying the peace offering, telling Punk there’s “so much that’s unsaid” between them and that his “mask slipped” the night before, that it “wasn’t an accident.”
Cameras caught the eye shot up close, and the replay makes Punk’s accident defense look worse with every rewatch.

Triple H physically stepped between the two men to cool things down, which is usually where a segment ends. Punk shoved Rhodes’ face anyway and told him, “That’s on purpose, little brother,” with Triple H standing right there as the witness.
Punk’s own line about brothers fighting and moving on is the one thing that muddies a clean petty read here. He’s playing peacemaker on camera while needling Rhodes off it, which is either restraint or a genuinely good angle. Maybe both.
WWE has spent two years manufacturing swerves that needed a whole writers’ room to sell. This one just needed an aggravated producer, a sore eye, and two guys who apparently can’t stand each other for real. The argument SummerSlam is supposed to settle in Minneapolis doesn’t need Triple H’s fingerprints on it. Punk already put his on Rhodes’ face.
