Gunther ambushed Cody before his Raw rematch against Sami Zayn on July 6, powerslamming him through a table and throwing him into a car door until Cody was ruled too bloodied to compete. The full SummerSlam 2026 card already has Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell. Now it has a main event that actually means something.
Here’s what makes this specific: the belt routes through Punk so Cody can take it back. That’s the story. Cody’s been the Undisputed Champion, survived Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42, held it together while Punk recovered from injuries that kept delaying the collision everyone could see coming since Royal Rumble 2024. The first time these two shared a TV screen, Cody eliminated Punk from the Rumble. The next eighteen months were both of them circling a match that kept getting pushed to “eventually.” Cody even offered Punk a title shot in April: “whenever you want it.” Punk collected in July, just not the way anyone expected.
I’ll be honest: part of me wonders if this lands the way it should. Punk winning in a replacement spot, with Cody sidelined by a Gunther beatdown rather than a clean program leading in — there’s a version of this that feels slightly constructed. The rivalry deserves a build that didn’t start with a table spot and a car door. And if Punk drops it in Minneapolis, the cynical read is that the last month was just plot mechanics.
But I don’t think that’s what this is. The chaos is the point. Punk has been an accelerant his entire career. He doesn’t slide cleanly into anyone’s narrative; he burns through it. Cody chasing a belt Punk lifted from under him is a better story than a straight handoff ever would’ve been. The grievance is real. The crowd reaction will be real. Minneapolis is going to be loud as hell.
