Carson Beck is making his Cardinals debut tonight, and Arizona somehow turned it into the entire story of what’s supposed to be Larry Fitzgerald’s weekend.
The Cardinals host the Panthers at 8pm ET in the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game, the one night a year built to send off a new Canton class before the gold jackets go on. This year that’s Fitzgerald and Luke Kuechly, plus Drew Brees, Roger Craig and Adam Vinatieri, all getting enshrined Saturday. Arizona’s answer to hosting a tribute for one of its own franchise legends was to rest every quarterback who actually matters and start a rookie instead.
That’s the whole bit.
Beck, Arizona’s third-round pick at No. 65 overall, gets the start because Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew are both getting the night off. That means the two guys actually expected to throw real passes for this team in September are standing on the sideline in whatever quarterbacks wear when they’re not playing.
My little sister, who roasts my takes in the family group chat more than she actually watches football, texted asking why the Cardinals are punting a Hall of Fame tribute for a guy she’d never heard of. Fair question. Arizona picked the one game built to honor Fitzgerald to run a live rookie audition instead, and that reads like a choice, not an accident.
Beck earned the look, at least. He transferred from Georgia to Miami for one season and turned it into a College Football Playoff title game appearance, beating Ohio State and Ole Miss along the way before losing to Indiana, throwing for 3,813 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions at a 72.4% clip. That’s a real season. It also happened against college defenses, which is exactly why tonight matters more than a normal third preseason snap count — this is the first real look at whether any of it translates against grown men who get paid to hit people.
Carolina isn’t treating this like a real game either. Kenny Pickett starts for the Panthers with Bryce Young sitting, and undrafted rookie Haynes King is expected to play most of the second half. Carolina’s already down a projected pass rusher after losing Nic Scourton and Chris Brazzell II to season-ending camp injuries. Vegas still has the Panthers as 1.5-point favorites with the total sitting at 36.5, which says plenty about how little the sportsbooks trust either team’s backup plan.

Nobody posts like that about a guy just keeping a seat warm for three quarters. Arizona didn’t design this as an audition on paper, but that’s exactly what it built, and Fitzgerald’s gold jacket ceremony is going to have to share its own weekend with a third-round rookie trying to prove he belongs on an NFL field.
