Nic Scourton tore his ACL on the very first padded practice of Panthers training camp, and the pass rush Carolina spent an entire offseason building barely survived a single practice before it went down in the mud. This is the single most Panthers thing that has ever happened to the Panthers.
Thursday, wet field, team drills. Scourton was engaged with an offensive lineman when his knee gave out, and he was carted off in tears. ESPN reported he’s done for the 2026 season and will get a second opinion before scheduling surgery. Training camp is already breaking teams everywhere this July, but nobody’s had a worse 24 hours than Carolina.
This isn’t just a good rookie getting hurt.
Scourton was the Panthers’ entire pass-rush blueprint, walking around on two legs. Carolina traded up six spots to grab him at No. 51 in last year’s draft out of Texas A&M, and he paid it back immediately as a rookie: 17 games, eight starts, 47 tackles, five sacks and nine quarterback hits, tied for the team lead in sacks on a defense that hasn’t had anybody to fear off the edge in years.
Then this offseason, Carolina signed Jaelan Phillips to a four-year, $120 million deal, $60 million guaranteed, the biggest free-agent contract handed out by any team in 2026. Scourton and Phillips were supposed to be the whole plan. A rookie who already had a nose for the quarterback, paired with a proven veteran who spent last season bouncing from Miami to Philadelphia at the trade deadline. Two years of work on one position group, finally fixed.
Here’s where it gets weird. One knee buckling in July and the entire equation changes. Nic Scourton doesn’t just miss a season, he costs the Panthers the exact pairing the front office spent a draft trade-up and $120 million building, and the Panthers pass rush is thin behind them once you get past those two names. Thin enough that the team is reportedly eyeing the veteran free-agent market to patch a hole that wasn’t supposed to exist a week ago. Rapoport had the news first:

No word yet on surgery timing, which tells you Carolina’s still hoping for a diagnosis that isn’t coming. I had actual money riding on this Panthers defense finishing top-20 in sacks this year.
That bet’s dead before Carolina’s played a single preseason snap.
To be fair, this isn’t a franchise-wide indictment. Phillips can still be a real problem for opposing tackles on his own, and Nick Bosa’s own ACL recovery is proof a torn knee in July doesn’t have to define a career, even if it defines a season. Scourton’s still early in his career, with plenty of runway left. He’ll be back.
He just won’t be back for the year the Panthers built their whole pass rush around him showing up.
